Introducing a new programme to run alongside your D&T teacher education course
Matt McLain and Alison Hardy have a new 6 session programme beginning in October 2021 aimed at student D&T teachers . The programme works alongside the Learning to Teach Design and Technology textbook, with each session focusing on a different aspect of teaching D&T.
The programme is designed to enhance, not replace, formal training and development courses. Each session is online, taking place on Wednesdays between 5 and 6pm (BST/GMT).
Below is the detail for each session. Feel free to copy and circulate to your students.
1 What is D&T and why are we here?
Wednesday 6th October 2021 / 5pm - 6pm
You are at the beginning of you D&T teaching career, before launching into the practicalities of how to teach and what to teach, in this session we will take a pause and think and the nature of D&T, why it is a school subject and your place in D&T.
In this session you will be introduced to the subject D&T, thinking about the nature of the subject, where it fits in the curriculum, where you fit in D&T.
The session will help you explore what D&T is for and this will help with your lesson planning.
2 Lesson planning and pedagogy
Wednesday 3rd November 2021 / 5pm - 6pm
You are teaching lessons, planning some with your mentor and others by yourself but is it working?
In this session, Sarah Davies and Matt McLain talk about the key features of lesson planning and pedagogy.
3 Planning for progression
Wednesday 19th January 2022 / 5pm - 6pm
You’ve planned a few lessons but how do you bring them together? In this session Alison and Matt will talk about planning for progression, how you step back and look at the bigger picture to help pupils progress in D&T
4 Subject knowledge
Wednesday 9th March 2022 / 5pm - 6pm
Some say that a problem with D&T is the amount of subject knowledge a teacher has to teach and a pupil has to learn. We think that the nature of D&T but also a false assumption. In this session, Alison and Matt talk about what subject knowledge is for, how you can keep up to date and using your knowledge in your D&T teaching.
5 Assessment and individuals
Wednesday 6th April / 5pm - 6pm
You’ve planned the lessons, your pupils are making progress but how do you measure that? In this session Alison and Matt reminds you about what you are assessing in D&T - D&T capability and introduces you to some assessment research from the Netherlands and Sweden that you can use in your classrooms for formative and summarise assessment.
6 What’s next
Wednesday 4th May / 5pm - 6pm
You’re almost at the end of your first year as a D&T teacher. In this final session, we’re joined by Liam Anderson, an experienced and successful head of department, who will talk about how you can think about your future in D&T as a leader, manager and excellent D&T teacher.

There are 2 sessions per term, taking place on Wednesdays from 5 to 6pm - the first is on Wednesday 6th October.
Tickets cost £16 per session (£75 for all six if purchased before the first event). They are available from Eventbrite.
These are for student teachers, not to replace your programmes, but to support their practice.
